Subject: West Middlesex soldiers

I have a child born in Salford in 1877 whose father married in
Dorset in 1869 as a private in the West Middlesex 57th Regiment. Does
anybody know if the 57th was in Manchester at this time. And was it usual
for for regiments to gad about all over the county - after all what were
they doing in Dorset earlier. I would have thought that a middlesex
regiment should be in Middlesex if they weren't off fighting somewhere.
