Hi Lorraine

Oldham was the greatest mill town in Lancashire (and therefore probably the
World), dwarfing even my own town of Bolton

In 1926, which was the peak; Bolton was 2nd with 7,842 "spindles" - Oldham
had 17,669 !!!!

The book I have to hand is "Cotton Mills of Greater Manchester" by Mike
William (with D.A.Farnie) - Carnegie Publishing Ltd. 1992.
(ISBN 0-948789-69-7). This has 187 entries in its Gazetteer for Oldham (76%
of them Cotton).

If you've any one in particular in mind I could do a look-up.

There is quite an interesting small book I have which gives some insight
into the industry. It's one of the Shire Album Series (No.63) called "The
Cotton Industry" by Chris Aspin. I picked it up second-hand so I don't know
if it's still in print. It's an 1984 reprint and was only 95p new so is
worth looking for.
