Subject: [LAN] Chain Letters and virus warnings
Date: Fri, 1 Oct 1999 15:31:06 +0100

Hi all,

While I agree that we don't want the list cluttering up with possibly
hundreds of copies of the same message I do feel a little upset that we're
being asked not to forward virus warnings, yes I know that many of them are
hoax's but some are not and I'd rather cope with the hoax chain letters in
order to receive warnings about the genuine birus's.

It was only a few days [a couple of weeks at most] that happy99 was let
loose by a poor unsuspecting sould on one of the other lists I sub to,
luckily it was noticed almost immediately and it is a rather old virus now
so some knew about it already but imagine that it had been a new virus that
someone on the list had heard about but had been prohibited from passing
the information on and that person and any others who did know about it
hadn't noticed in time, hundreds of people could open the virus file and
infect their computers and then infect others before it was realised what
was going on.

the lists listowners probably won't like me for this but my suggestion is
that warning relating to virus's are sent directly to them [the listowner
of the month], they can then check out the genuineness of the warning and
then post to the list or delete accordingly, this way we'll all be kept
informed but we won't have hundreds of messages flying about.

Any thoughts anyone?

Tracey.
