I too have found the IGI invaluable, but do bear in mind that it may not
have all the records for a parish, just as it doesn't have every parish
represented.

To illustrate my point, I was looking for a family name in Tideswell,
Derbyshire. A number of the family christenings were listed back to 1761,
but "my" ancestor wasn't listed. Some time later through a look-up list I
learnt that there was a gap in the Bishops Transcripts for Tideswell between
1730 and 1760. I checked the IGI entries for Tideswell, and, sure enough,
they were extracted from the BTs. I then looked up the LDS Library on line
and found that they had the Parish Records for Tideswell on film, but they
hadn't been extracted yet. I ordered the film through the local LDS Family
Centre, and, sure enough, there were the complete records - no gap. And
there was my ancestor's christening, which linked my family back to 1670 !

Its well worth looking at the film source of IGI entries, as you often find
occupations etc listed, as well as burials.
