The son would probably not have had a passport. I don't think that British
children under 16 years were able to obtain a passport until Feb 7th 1968
(it was compulsory to provide an up-to-date photograph for each 5-year
extension thereafter).
I have no idea about the requirements of the Cape of Good Hope.
