This is not strictly true. It was the first census to contain information
nationwide of direct use to genealogists. There were however earlier census
taken. These were for the whole simply statistical exercises and contain no
useful information. There were however an occasional few of these earlier
census that contained names etc. I believe Great Bolton was one such area
and the Manchester and Lancashire FHS sell indexes to the 1811, 1821 and
1831 censuses.

The only other pre 1841 census of any use in Lancashire that I am aware of
is one carried out among the Pole Lane Independent Chapel congregation in
about 1820. But that was a different type of census than we usually speak of.
