My guess is "non-conformist". In the 19th century, nonconformists not
wishing to be buried according to the Anglican tradition were denied any
prayers at the graveside, and were "buried like a dog". (See my family
history, Chap 2, under "Samuel's Contributions to Civic Affairs".)
