Subject: [LAN] Leigh; Bedford; Chisnall and Rosbottom
Date: Tue, 06 Feb 2001 08:13:53 EST
My GGrandmother was Sarah Chisnall, born 1851 in Leigh; her parents were Richard Chisnall (born Hindley) and Elizabeth Rosbottom (born Little Hulton).
Does anyone have any information on these families?
I “found” the family in the 1851 and 1861 census but not 1871.
In 1851, they are living on Chapel Street; the description of the enumeration district-“all that part of the Township of Bedford lying between the highway and the canal from Brown House to the westerly side of King Street inclusive”
Is this street still there?
In 1861, the family is living in Jones Square, apparently next /near a Cotton Mill and a Day School. Does this area remain at all intact-does the Mill and or school still exist? What kind of housing would this have been-does any of it remain?
Richard worked in the mill as a cotton power loom weaver.
The names of the children were Martha (19), James (17), William (15), John (12),
Sarah (10), George (5), Joseph (3), Elizabeth A (1)
By 1871, I can no longer “find” any of the family in Leigh. My GGM Sarah and two of her siblings, Joseph and John are in Newburyport, MA USA in the 1970 census, living with Thomas Rosbottom (54- born in England)-probably Sarah’s uncle?
Any thoughts, leads or information about these families and towns would be really appreciated; if anyone is interested in further USA information on these families I can assist them.
Thanks in advance,
Hopkinton, MA USA
