I believe the Society of Genealogists produce an index to the 2% sample on
microfiche but do not know if it includes details of the actual books
covered in the sample. One of the difficulties is that since they did it by
book rather than district this often means that only part of an area is
covered. so to some extent it does not help to know the areas covered as
you can not be sure if the whole area is there or not. The other draw back
is that there is no cross reference to census films and so if you find an
entry on the 2% sampling you need to get hold of the street index to find
which microfilm the original entry is on.
The 2% sampling is a useful tool but only in the sense of a possible quick
find and it can only be used in a very limited way to eliminate possibilities.
I have actually been toying for sometime about putting the 2% sampling into
a searchable on-line database but would probably need to get copyright
clearance and since there is someone I believe who produce a CD version
then permission might be hard to obtain.
