Hello Melanie,

My golden rule whenever I find a possible baptism is to immediately turn to
the burial register for that parish and make sure that the child did not
die. I even extend the search up to and just a bit after his/her date of
marriage if known, just to be doubly sure. If it's not possible for you to
look at the burial register yourself, perhaps you could ask someone with
access to do a lookup.

I had once found two ideal baptisms for my 5 x great grandfather John Stokes
in Cheshire/Lancs, but when I searched the first register (Nantiwich) I
found this child had died. The second (at Melling by Maghull) seemed to
live quite a while so I was more hopeful, until I eventually found him
buried in his own parish two years before my John started having his
children in Cheadle - so I had to eliminate him too.

It's become a habit with me now, to immediately check the corresponding
burial register - and sometimes even for surrounding parishes. It may be
pedantic, but it has saved me from many a spurious connection to my tree.
