Hi John,

Most of these seem to be farm labourers who would have been taken on to work
the land on neighbouring farms during the spring/summer/autumn months. The
navvies could have been doing the same work, or could have been engaged in
building roads, or canal and railway maintenance work.
In 1880/81 a lot of new street lamps were erected in both Middleton and
Tonge (gas), and men were needed to do the digging.
