Hi Denis
Somebody in Wigan must not know what they are talking about. They *do* have
the 1851 census surname indexes, they have the same ones that I have here,
Vol.16 which covers Ince, Hindley, Abram, Winstanley,& Pemberton all on
HO107/2200 & in the same volume HO107/2201 which covers Dalton, Upholland,
Billinge Higher End and Chapel End & Ashton-in-Makerfield, and Vol.15,
HO107/ 2199 which covers all Wigan Town both published by the Manchester &
Lancashire FHS.

I *thought* they had indexes to the 1841 as well, I'll have to check on my
next visit. I always praise the History Shop especially because it is the
only place I know where they have indexed all their census years (well, I
did their 1891 ones and deposited copies with them).

It's such a shame that your timing is bad, I have been at the LRO all day
and could have done both census years for you whilst there. I don't know
when I will be free again to go there or to the History Shop. School
Holidays and grandchildren to look after! All I can do is send you all the
Tunstall folio numbers and hope you can order the films from your nearest
LDS FHC. I'll send the lot, just in case they moved. I have already searched
the index containing Ince, but there are none there.

Just decided to go on familysearch for you. Found suitable birth of Thomas.
Tried for his marriage but none suitable. Do you know if they were
nonconformist? The 2 under were the only ones thrown up after I put in the
information,
