Lauren,
Further to previous replies, Blackpool was the 'Mecca' at Wakes week.
However, I have seen other holiday destinations advertised in old copies of
the Ashton Reporter. To quote from the Easter edition, 1900, an article
about where people had been:

"Railway bookings included South Wales (12), North Wales (40), Scotland
(10), Leeds (20), Buxton (30), Blackpool (260), Huddersfield (20) and
Liverpool (160). The great central railway took another 470 to Belle Vue and
290 to Manchester. A further 750 went to Blackpool by the light railway and
the Stalybridge Rovers trip."

I suspect that some of these destinations would be people visiting relatives
and friends in their place of origin, but this is only a guess.

Ian
