Sunderland (or Sunderland Point) was once an "out port" for Lancaster where
ships could load or unload either onto the mudflats or into smaller vessels
and avoid the difficult passage up the Lune to Lancaster. It can be reached
on foot at any time but by road only at low tide - the road beyond Overton
is covered by the sea twice a day. I suppose the few people who live there
must arrange to stay somewhere else when it's going to be high water at
going to work time. The old road from Lancaster to Overton was also tidal
and the Golden Ball pub is not accessible by road at high water.
Find Sunderland (Point) on a map by going to www.streetmap.co.uk click on UK
place and type in Sunderland then select Sunderland (Lancashire)
