It could be a case of illegitimacy. My grandfather was known as Robert
Cumpstey as was his older brother. I could never find his birth
certificate. As it turns out, his mother Ellen Jane (Ashton) was married to
a Thomas Coupe, making her Ellen Jane Coupe. But it seems Ellen Jane was
living with a widower named William Cumpstey and his 3 young daughters.
While living with Mr. Cumpstey, Ellen Jane had 7 children all recorded as
Coupe, some as Cumpstey-Coupe. On all the census records they are listed as
Coupe. As adults, on marriage certificates, service records, etc. these
children used the Cumpstey name.
