Hi Susan
It certainly looks like there is a link to the famous company of Dobson and
Barlows so it will be worth following up your husbands ancestral links.
After I'd written to you I actually found quite a long article in one of my
Bolton books regarding the company.
The original Dobson was named Isaac - born in 1767 in Patterdale Westmorland
and who came to Bolton as a youth. He originally worked for a cabinet maker
but turned his attentions in partnership with a Peter Rothwell to
manufacturing cotton spinning machinery around 1790.
Peter Rothwell died in 1816 and Isaac took on his nephew Benjamin Dobson as
a partner. Isaac died at Gilnow House, Bolton in 1833 and Benjamin carried
on the business until his death aged 52 in 1839 at Mere Hall, Bolton (the
building which is now the present Registrar's Offices). His son Benjamin
took on the business later in partnership with Edward Barlow.
This Benjamin Dobson retired in 1871 due to ill-health and the business
passed among others to his nephew Benjamin A. Dobson the son of Arthur
Dobson of Belfast.
This Benjamin A. Dobson is the one you are seeking to establish a link with.
He was Benjamin Alfred Dobson but he seems to have continued the tradition
of ill-health because he died 4th March 1898 aged 50 (born 27th October
1847). Apart from being knighted he was also a Lieutenant Colonel and major
of Bolton 1895-1898. It is his statue which is on Bolton Town Hall Square
next to the Town Hall.
See http://www.bolton.org.uk/victoria.html#dobson
Hope this gives you something else to work on.
Unfortunately the Isle of Man census is not available on-line at the moment
I don't believe; so I'm unable to check if the family was there in 1891.
I take it this is the family in 1881............ Clearly a link with the
spinning industry.
