My understanding is that it was not something they necessarily asked either,
just that the person volunteered the information. I guess there was no
standard for establishing that. I have a couple of them where I know for a
fact the father was deceased but it's not noted.
*sigh* Scottish records are a real treat- you get both parents names,
including mothers maiden name, on birth, marriage and death certificates,
and you are told if they are deceased. Why English records of the era are so
chary with information I don't know- US records of that time are also much
more informative.
