Hello Reet,

As far as I'm aware there was no official form of adoption at that time. I
have exactly the same problem. My great-grandfather was an 8-year-old
Boarder with a family in Blackpool in 1871, and by 1881 they had adopted
him. I've not found any family connections and there's no father entered on
the birth certificate.
