Erm, so why have I got a list of canal passenger fares from 1845? (g)
This is info from the Winter 1844 timetable for canal boats between
Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Passenger boats
Edinburgh to Glasgow at 9 morning and 12 noon - 1st cabin 1s 6d 2nd cabin
1s
This compares to 8s for a first class railway ticket to Glasgow and 2s for
fourth class, from the same book - a contemporary almanac.
Fares are also given for other destinations and for 'Night boats with
passengers and goods'
I suppose its possible the system was different in England...
