True, Phil, very true; definitely farther than I'd care to walk regularly.
Having said which I myself actually come from Shaw, between Oldham and
Rochdale, which is around the same distance, but now live in Bolton; what I
meant to say was that the two are "local". For instance I class Oldham,
Rochdale or even Manchester as "close" to Shaw. The correspondents were
trying, IIRC, to establish whether their families might once have been
something like "neighbours"? Though I still find myself occasionally
thinking of Bolton as "furrin parts", which is daft considering I've lived
here about fifteen years! Cheers, Ian
