Perhaps Grandma had been hoping your grandfather would agree to marry in a
Catholic church - and that's why she waited until just a few days before
giving birth to marry him.

But are you sure they weren't married twice? For a "very very strong
Catholic" it seems odd she was pregnant before marrying. Perhaps the first,
Catholic, marriage wasn't completely legal and they had to remarry in the C
of E?

I went to school with a friend from a family whose mother was Catholic and
the father a non-conformist. All the boys were baptised into the Catholic
faith, but the girls were not - presumably by mutual agreement of their
parents!
