Hi, Stephen,
You ask about Rochdale and Castleton. The best place to start for the
answers to questions like this is Lancashire Genuki
(www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN ) This will provide you with quite a lot of
basic information about these places from a family history point of view.
Another site that is very useful is
http://www.mancuniensis.info/SalfordHundredFP.htm because it has some very
clear maps of the Salford Hundred, the south-east corner of Lancashire. If
you look at the coverage pages of LancashireBMD (www.lancashirebmd.org.uk )
you will find lists of the Registration Districts, and the Sub-Districts and
their operational years. The Census returns are collected by Enumeration
Districts that are derived from the Registration Districts and
Sub-Districts.
