Adele, I can't speak for other lists, of course, but as far as LancsGen
is concerned, the e-mail addresses of subscribers to this list indicate
that the majority of subscribers live in England. It also appears that
a substantial portion of participants on the Lancashire message board
live in England. There are participants on both the list and board from
all over the world, of course, many more from areas that were formerly
part of the UK.
If you're trying to research a particular surname only in one particular
part of the world, you may be able to find an appropriate list. For
instance on RootsWeb, there are many lists focused on the UK, although
they may not be obvious.. Trawl through the surnames lists or use the
search facility at <http://lists.rootsweb.com/> to find them. Using S M
I T H as an example, you'll find more than forty lists devoted to that
particular surname at
<http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/s/smith.html>, including
several lists for various counties in England. If there is no list for
a particular surname and location and there seems to be a need for one,
RootsWeb will gladly create a new list.
