I found Lawrence with the surname of Eaves in 1871, albeit the census has him as Samuel J, living in Poulton Le Fylde. It confirms the birth year to be about 1864 in Manchester.

There's certainly no Mayon's on Freebmd, nor Lancs BMD that fit, the closest I could get with a possible mis-spelling was Makel or Bannon, but that's probably clutching at straws :o) I know that he didn't get baptised in Church of the Sacred Trinity in the Parish of Salford as I already checked that on the OPC page. Still going through other pages that I have bookmarked, but are there any other clues at all that you have?
