It seems that Robert Lanier's first wife was Jane Patillo. After his death
she married Capt. Francis Poindexter. Jane and Francis had three children
(Jane, Francis, and Thomas William). Jane's daughter, Jane, is the person
who married Jacob Clingman and gave birth to Thomas Lanier Clingman.
The only other possibility would be that the Jane mentioned in Ingersoll's
book was Jane Patillo, not Jane Poindexter, married for the 3rd time, Jacob
Clingman.
Andy, you are correct in your assumption that Thomas Lanier Clingman was
not a blood relation to the Lanier's.
If anyone out there sees the situation differently please let us hear from you.
