I also found a copy of Sidney head and shoulder looking to his right, profile. I scanned it and have it as a picture on my Civil War CD. Flowing beard and dark hair. I do not know if any of you know the old wives tale of the "Indian Nose"?? But my grandmother Nancy Joyner, had this and I have it. Nose longer than most with a little hump in the center of the bridge (hope that is right, top of the nose?). Mama said she was 1/4 Indian from the VA area. I have not been able to trace anything but would love to know. That only would give me a drop but that is better than nothing. The other thing is the "nick" in the outside of ear, just a little nick like a V. Some of the Sloan's have it.

Florida Poet of the Century
Sidney Lanier
"Although best known for his poetry about Georgia's swamps (Marshes of Glynn) Sidney Lanier reluctantly agreed to write promotional material for a railroad in order to help support his family and find help for his increasingly severe tuberculosis. In 1875 he began "Florida: In Scenery, Climate, and History" for the Atlantic Coast Line that ran through Florida. In writing the guidebook, Lanier realized how healthful the state is for ill people such as himself and wrote some poems about Florida (Tampa Reprint)"
Source: I will have to send later as it came from one of those Encyclopedies you buy on CD.

Thank you Liz. That is the picture I have of the Hotel with Sidney
standing on the 1st floor veranda. They don't seem to be sure if that
is Sidney on the extreme right side or the left side. I tried blowing
up both figures but the man with his leg over the balcony is too fuzzy
to see properly.
Wonderful, now all of you interested in a copy can take one from this
picture which is clearer than the one I have and now we all know just
where this Hotel was, Florida. Great! Mystery solved on this question
anyway.
