Hello,

I am essentially rehashing an old query that I posted in the Orleans Parish,
Louisiana (GenWeb) Forum back in July,'98.
For most, this will just be another interesting story for amateur geneologists
and archivists. For a few it might mean something else, maybe.

I am the descendant of the following ancestor:
Denis Barry Haggerty (or Hegarty, or Hagurty), born in 1824 in Ballahoulihan,
County Cork, Ireland.
He immagrated from Ireland to Louisiana, USA at about age 10 (ca. 1835) to work
on his uncle's (Mr. Barry) plantation in the Teche Country of Lousiana.
On March 26, 1853 he married Marry Barry, a "distant" cousin of his, in New
Orleans.

He became a successful cotton merchant and had a business called "Haggerty's
Cotton Pickery" on Market Street in New Orleans. In another source, the business
might also have been on Orange and Tchoupitoulas Streets.
Their home may have been at one time on Thalia Street, in the Catholic parish of
St. Theresa of Avila.
Denis Haggerty died on May 16,1890. His wife Mary may have died in 1902. Both
in New Orleans.

Mary Elizabeth Haggerty (1854-1936)
Catherine Clara Cecilia Haggerty (1856-1887)
Dennis Bernard Haggerty (1858-1910)
John Jerome Haggerty (1862-1937)
Patrick Francis Haggerty (1865-?)
Joseph James Haggerty (1868-1898)
Thomas Alphonsus Haggerty (1870-?)
Ellen Bernadette Haggerty (1874-1875)
Margaret Mary Haggerty (1874-1965)
Edward Aloysius Haggerty (1877-?)

I am a descendant of John Jerome Haggerty, who was a cotton sampler at the New
Orleans cotton exchange.

I have already found 2 contacts. One is a descendant of Mary Elizabeth Hagerty.
The second is a descendant of Dennis Bernard Haggerty.

Here is another intersting tidbit. Denis Barry Haggerty was related to Michael
Collins, the former president of the Irish Free State, who was killed in 1922.

I was just wonderimg if there are other descendants of this family out there,
and/or if any documentation can be found, especially regarding obituaries for
Denis Haggerty and marriage certificate for Denis and Mary Haggerty.
