Hi Marie,
the Census taker puts the names down that he is given. He can not ask how
to spell them. He doesn't ask for a 1st, middle and last just asks who
lives here. So it looks like your William George, went by George, and when
whoever was asked, they answered George! Being use to calling him that. BUT
most adults, when filling out a legal paper will put their whole name down.
Even if they use their middle name.
You may find census that have both names, or only one name, that may
change. FUN isn't it!!
NOW tell me WHY I named my 3rd daughter a name that we/and now she, use
the middle name only!!!
Maybe it was the drugs they gave me!?? LOL
I think if I was asking for records, I would give the whole name, with a
note that he used George, most of the time, then hope for the best... You
may find that he used the full name on forms. good luck! Val
