While I was at the New Orleans Public Library doing research yesterday, I asked the head of the Louisiana Division, Collin Hamer, if he could help me figure out how to access the New Orleans Passenger Ship Indexes in the Family History Library, so I could find out how to get the film numbers.

He did it!

So here's how you can order a reel of film from the FHC that will have the part of the index of New Orleans Passenger Ship Lists that you need:

Go to the Family History Library Catalog:

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp

Do an AUTHOR search for

United States. Immigration and Naturalization Service

The link that comes up will lead you to all kinds of microfilms published by the Immigration and Naturalization Service including a large number of passenger lists.

To get the film numbers, click on the link you're interested in. For example:

Passenger lists of vessels arriving at New Orleans, 1820-1921 ; Index to passenger lists of vessels arriving in New Orleans, 1853- 1952

Then click on VIEW FILM NOTES. That will give you a list like the one below. The number under Location Film is the number of the roll of film to order. For example, if you wanted to see the index of names beginning with Aab-Banne 1853-1859 on the New Orleans Passenger Ship Index, you'd order Film # 543403:
