Jewish people are buried in the ground even here in New Orleans. When my
mother died, I had to get the grave site prepared with a coping. If I
recall correctly, her gravesite is lined with concrete, so that no water can
seep in there.

If you go to the Jewish cemeteries here in New Orleans, you will see the
gravesites in the ground.
