Subject: [LAORLEAN-L] Look ups.......

Dee, I have a copy of the records of Slaves being given their freedom from
the late 1700's into the early 1800's, and would be willing to volunteer to
do look ups if you want to put me down on the volunteer look-up page of
the site. These records are not just important to people looking for free
people of color ancestors, but also in many cases give the notary of the
person who was giving them their freedom.
Knowing who the family notary is can really help in finding documents at
the notary office.
the records also give (in many cases), ages and reasons for the freeing
etc. Since all legal transactions needed a notary, there is a wealth of
information at the notary archives in N.O. But you have to know WHO the
notary is. These records make finding that info out a little bit easier.
There are over 500 pages of records.
