Yes, I was talking to my friend, an archeologist, the other day. The
subject came up and I was surprise to learn that the RTA (Rapid Transit
Authority) wants to buy a portion? of the Charity Hospital Cemetery for the
transit system. From what I understood, the remains would be moved,
cremated or otherwise placed in another part of the cemetery. I also
understood that the cemetery was in operation starting in 1848 but only open
for about 10 years??????? I remember hearing, as a kid, of Potters Field,
so I don't know if that is another part of the Charity Hospital Cemetery or
what. Maybe there are several parts to the cemetery. Also, is Holt also a
public cemetery like the Charity Hospital cemetery? Where is it located? I
don't have the full story either, but it corroborates Carolyn's e-mail about
the cemetery being up for sale.

Let's stay informed!!

I sent the inquiry about the Charity Hospital Cemetery and the little flags
to my friend Robert Florence, president of the excellent group Friends of
New Orleans Cemeteries (which all of you New Orleanians should join and
support). Here's his answer:

"Yes,Charity Hospital Cemetery was where Charity Hospital buried its
unclaimed dead for many years.I have info on it somewhere regarding
specifics.
Funny but recently a For Sale sign appeared. The state was trying to sell
it.
Archeologist Katy Coyle was hired (through her firm) to do a
monitoring of the site and determined that there would be perhaps 100's
of 1000's of bodies buried there. I called the state agency selling it
and they somehow left out that information. The For SALE sign is no
longer there.I will send you some information on the cemetery once I find
it.
Also,I think it's briefly profiled in the New Orleans Architecture series
cemetery book."
