Subject: [LAORLEAN-L] German Church Records -- An Addition
Date: Sun, 23 Mar 2003 15:42:04 -0800 (PST)

To list:

I have made an addition to my German Church Records
Web site that may be of interest to New Orleans
researchers. It is not a large addition, but as we all
know, any little bit of information could provide the
link someone needs to advance his/her research. The
primary Web site is here:
http://freepages.religions.rootsweb.com/~neworleans/

The records are the baptism records -- 1840 to March
1844 -- of what was known as the "German Lutheran
Church." This church is today's St. Paul Lutheran
Church, located at Port and Burgundy Streets.
Information on the church's records is here:
http://freepages.religions.rootsweb.com/~neworleans/german_church_records/02.html

I was aware of these records, having searched the
originals at Tulane's Library some years ago. However,
I was unaware of a transcription/translation until
NOVA Volunteer Karen Riecke started offering lookups
in March 2002. See:
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/LAORLEAN/2002-03/1015100395
Karen kindly mailed me a copy of them.

I recently learned that these records had been
published in _New Orleans Genesis_ through a message
posted by Kathy Storm:
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/LAORLEAN/2003-03/1047163068
Kathy provided me with the citations as to where these
records can be found.

Taking a chance, I contacted Dr. Wilbur Meneray at
Tulane, who has gave me permission to put these
records online, so long as access is free. (He sounds
like one of us!) The baptism records are now available
and I plan to add the deaths soon. Also, I will work
with the NOVA "Web Team" (Colleen, Dee, Cat, Penny) to
add them to the Orleans Parish Digital Archives.

Please excuse the length of this message, but I wanted
to once again point out the usefulness of this list,
and how the contributions of everyone -- all working
together -- can help us all, and many others in the
future.

Oh, by the way, the baptism records are at:
