Susan,
There is a bit more information about the Mortality
Schedules here:
http://www.ancestry.com/library/view/columns/george/898.asp
The 1850 and 1860 schedules can be searched through
Ancestry.com, the same as for other census records. A
search box for members is here:
http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/inddbs/3530a.htm
They can also be searched along with other census
records:
http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/census/ais/main.htm
As I noted earlier, some of them for 1850 have been
posted on the Orleans Parish Online Archives at:
http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/la/orleans/census/mort1850.txt
These apparently were published in the LOUISIANA
GENEALOGICAL REGISTER, the publication of the
Louisiana Genealogical & Historical Society. See:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~la-lghs/register.htm
It appears that other parts of the 1850 schedules are
available in other issues. These presumably would be
available at the New Orleans Public Library or the
State Library of Louisiana or the Louisiana State
Archives.
The 1850 mortality schedule is also available in
published form:
http://199.120.252.65/ipac20/ipac.jsp?session=1057E7EJ65484.1414&profile=nopline&uri=link=3100006@!47587@!3100001@!3100036&aspect=basic_search&menu=search&ri=1&source=192.168.1.2@!horizon&term=Mortality+schedule%2C+Louisiana+%2F&index=ALLTITL#focus
This is available at the NOPL and presumably other
libraries in New Orleans, and may be available through
Interlibrary Loan.
Someone else may have a better idea of where to find
indexes to these records, especially for 1870 and
1880.
