Thank you, Norm, for that information. I went to
http://lrs.railspot.com/h/h-ferries.htm and determined that it would have been the New Orleans-Algiers
Ferry that would have taken him across the Mississippi River at New Orleans.
However, I haven't been able to find a history of the Memphis and New Orleans
Railroad to find out if it was in operation to Lafayette in 1880. Any
suggestions on how to find that out?
