Thanks, Peggy for alerting us to this article. It was most interesting and
brought back memories of my childhood when I attended some of these "home
funerals". The seating arrangement is described like it was and I can
remember the black drape on the front door and the black armbands on the
pallbearers.
Also, very vivid in my memory are all the ladies dressed in black and each
one having "Smelling Salts" or a tiny vial of "Aromatic Spirits of Ammonia".
They used them, too. Don't remember anyone fainting but my question is--did
they mourn more than we do or did they need the smelling salts and Spirits
of Ammonia because they were so gussetted up in their long heavy morurning
dresses in the hot weather?
Can anyone elaborate on any of this?
