When I was growing up in New Orleans there was a Kern family who had a
corner grocery store in the Carrollton Section, I believe it was on Green
Street. They had a daughter named Matilda Kern and to my knowledge, she
never married. At least she hadn't married when I left New Orleans in the
40s. She was quite a bit older than I was--already an adult when I was a
child!!
Could this family fit in with your search?

Emma,
I'm not sure, but I'll hang on the the information. I checked my list of
deaths until about 1916 and couldn't come up with a Matilda. I'll try finding
info on the Matilda you mentioned and work backwards from there. It's worth a
try. Thanks.
Audrey
