Susan,
I dont have access to all the resources needed to
answer all your questions. This Website
http://nutrias.org/%7Enopl/info/louinfo/numberchanges/changest.htm
indicates that what was 54 N. Tonti in 1890-1891 is in
todays 300 block of Tonti, between Bienville and
Conti Streets. No. 54 was on the lake side of the
street.
The 1896 Sanborn map shows a series of dwellings on
the lake side of the street, none of which appear to
be anything unusual. There were three single houses
and two doubles. Any house could have been used as a
rooming/boarding house. It would appear likely that
part of 54 N. Tonti was used by a group of unrelated
people, and another part (54-1/2) by the Churchill
family.
Judging by the information I have available, 54 N.
Conti was probably somewhere near 319 or 329 N. Conti,
both of which were large single houses. You could
contact the Historic New Orleans Collection
<http://www.hnoc.org>. They might be willing to narrow
that down for you, as they have all the necessary
maps, especially the 1883 Robinson atlas.
If you get it pinned down, you would have to get
someone to volunteer to go there to see if the house
still stands. Many houses in that area from the late
19th century still exist, albeit in various states of
repair.
Heres a link to show its approximate location:
http://maps.yahoo.com//maps_result?csz=New+Orleans%2C+LA+70119-5737&state=LA&uzip=70119&ds=n&name=&desc=&ed=U86AZOp_0Tq1Z3SGRmbhEa_T036Dhf922v1ED1DHnJuXHrUgr1GZuUTTBcCOJIxqfCIaXQ4rbhy_PFMGd._CwXyJcrls5fNOLYcesL9CJJAq&BFClick=&BFKey=&zoomin=yes&mag=9
Just to let you know while youre reading these street
names, its an idiosyncrasy of New Orleans that many
street names are pronounced in unusual ways. Conti is
generally pronounced something like KON-tie, while
Tonti is pronounced something like tawn-TEE.
This should get you started.
