HI, this is in response to some of the questions. I work at the Hermann-Grima/Gallier Historic Houses and some of the information is in our tours. Prior to St. Louis #1 there was a gravesite on St. Peter. That became unmanageable and St. Louis #1 was built. More information on that may come from someone else. As to wells. After the 2 devastating fires in the late 1700's, a very strict building code was enacted. Homes had to built of brick, roofs had to be slate or stone, brick walls had to separate property and each home had to have it's own fire protection. Many homes dug wells. These were never used for drinking purposes, only fire protection. The water would have been contaminated because of the poor sanitation in the city. Hermann-Grima still has it's original well and both houses have cisterns.Homes had cisterns for water usage until the early 1900's. They were closed at this point because they realized they were breeding grounds for mosquitos.
Great project!

LAORLEAN-D Digest Volume 04 : Issue 532

Subject: Epidemics, wells, levee, etc.

Who better to ask than people who are so familiar with New Orleans.

1. Were there any other type of epidemics in New Orleans besides the three Yellow Fever epidemics?

2. Were there any mass graves?

3. Did the early Spanish and French settlers use the Mississippi River Levee to bury the dead?

4. Does anyone know when the levee was first constructed?

5. Were wells commonly used in New Orleans?

5. Was Goodchildren Street renamed? Was Customhouse Street renamed?

Sorry to be so full of questions but am writing the New Orleans story of our immigrants and how the family developed since the 1600's in Switzerland, then Germany and on to New Orleans. I am doing this for my children and my Michigan grandchildren. It is one of my Christmas gifts to my family. I have lots of New Orleans memories and history, but now and then I have senior moments.

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

Margaret
