three years ago we went to St. Borromeo Cemetery in Destrehan and cleaned the marve graves of bob's gggggrandfather and his daughters that died in 1823. We used a garden sprayer and sprayed pure chlorox --let it sit for 5 minutes, then gave a light scrubbing with a brush and rinsed it off with a garden watering hose attached to a portable generator with air pressure hose. The marble was black when we started from the 100 + years of weathering. Well when we finished it was gleaming white and to this day it is still very white, Very easy to do.

Hi Alfred -- that's a shame about the tombstone. I would suggest trying the
gentlest methods possible first. Maybe go at a small section with some
baking powder &/or cornstarch on a dampened cloth, or some Bon Ami.
If that doesn't work, pull out the bigger guns, always testing on a small
part first. I googled the problem, & all of the sites said pretty much the
same thing -- apply a poultice to the stain, allow to dry, then clean off.

I also found a reference about using CitriSolve or a similar product to get
tar, oil, grease etc. out of clothing. Might be worth a try on the
tombstone, too.
