In the late 40s & early 50s when we were visiting in New Orleans, I was allowed to go to the movies in town by myself. My grandmother's telephone number was drilled into my head in case I got lost and my admittedly poor memory is that it was Uptown 1136W. She had one of those old telephones that was a mouthpiece on a short upright tube and an earpiece that hung on a "saddle" on the side of the upright. Seems that at one point you had to go through an operator. The number was later changed to Twinbrook something or another.

Am I totally disremembering this???

I recall phone #s being listed that way in the 50s & 60s (Twinbrook
17167, etc), but they were usually followed by five digits at that
time not four, so the time frame you mentioned is probably closer to
the years you are looking for.
