Yes, it certainly does still exist. My grandmother had a nervous breakdown
and was sent there in the 1930s. This was the time of experimental
psychiatry and I think they did shock treatments, and I suspect a labotomy
on her. She never was normal after that and was in and out of the place for
decades. Her five children had to be raised in an orphanage.

I visited Pineville on a trip to Louisiana a few years ago and it was still
active even though I had the feeling it was deserted. The grounds are quite
lovely. I was told the old records are kept upstairs in an attic and was
given the impression it would be very difficult to find anything so I never
pursued it after that. Coincidentally, a few days ago I thought about
re-investigating because I have a lot of unanswered questions about my
grandmother's mental health.

I don't know how much you know about the place but it is located just across
the bridge from Alexandria and is listed in the phone book. They probably
won't be too cooperative about bringing out old records because it would
take a lot of work and there are a lot of lazy people out there. However,
I'd appreciate you sharing any information you obtain and I'll be sure to
share anything I run across. Good luck.
