Hi Jeanne:
I am related to the Savage family of Chenneyville, Rapides Parish. My
Great-grandfather John Wesley Savage was drafted into the Confederate Army
in 1865, while he and his family were living in Rapides Parish. They all
continued to live in Rapides Parish after the War. Is this family listed in
your book?
Thanks,
Linda

Hello Betty:
The Central Louisiana Families In 1880 book by Verda Jenkins Ruff is a
genealogical guide to Rapides Parish during the pots-Civil War period. It
has
an Introduction by Winston DeVille, Fellow, American Society of Genealogy.
It
was published (I believe) in Forest Hill, La., 1986.
The book lists names and some information of the families living in Rapides
Parish in 1880 (Alexandria and Pineville along with other cities and wards
of
Rapides Parish). The author did lots of research of cemeteries, tomb
inscription and other sources to give as much information as she could. She
has emphasized that this book is only a guide and not the final word on the
families of that period. This seems to be her first book.
I have found some of my ancestors in this book. Only recently I unearthed
another name and checked it out in the book and found how it is connected.
This was exciting to me as I am at a dead end on my direct line so I was
thrilled to find even a small clue to a branch!!!
My family is Peyton with branches of Readman, Paton, Payton, Pemberton, and
Voorhies.
I will be glad to look up any names for anyone in the book. The drawback at
present is the Index. It is not very accurate and I am attempting to
reindex
it.
Also, am trying to find out where I ordered this book as I've had it quite a
while, before I had a computer! I've made a few inquiries at book stores
but
no one seems to have any idea of where I could find it.
Jeanne
