Subject:Re: [LARAPIDE-L] Robert, Rutledge, Grimball families-Wilkinson
Co,Miss, Rapi...

David,

Thank you for all that! Wish I had a copy of that book!

For what it's worth, James Rutledge and Ann Owen were from Virginia as fas
as
we know--and had no connection to the famous SC Rutledges... Though I did
just see a reference suggesting that they went from VA to SC before going to
GA... Wish I could find any proofs about that...

Do you have the book you refer to? Does it list any documentation? I've
heard of the books of course, though I haven't seen them. But I want to
know
where the info listed there came from--does it say? Is any of it available
to get copies of? Sorry, I'm a bit compulsive--but I want to SEE the
proofs... Too many of the books out there are so full of errors I just
don't
want to accept it as "gospel" if it can't be proved. Great for clues tho!
My library doesn't have these books, unfortunately. If the evidence its
listed I'll redouble my efforts to find them thru interlibrary loan or
something...

Really appreciate you sending this--are you of this line also? If so, which
branch?

Dear Cyndi,

I have both books that I mentioned, and neither has any what I would call
hard documentation. The Miller book is a compilation of submissions from
various researchers and has no index for that matter. The Stafford book does
list a limited index and a limited bibliography as the end of each of the
three chapters. Even so, it is mostly listings of family records in private
hands. I, too would like to someday see really large books with lots of
reproduced documentation.

Both books were still available last I knew: the Stafford book(s) from
Claitor's Publishing in Baton Rouge, Louisiana (approx. cost $30 + shipping)
and the Miller book to descendants of any of the lines covered, which
includes Robert. If you are interested in getting the Miller book (approx.
$30) published privately, let me know as I can probably put you in touch
with someone to help with that. If you try to see if the Miller book might
be available via ILB, specify the 1987 edition.

I believe that most people think that the Stafford books are largely
excellent. The Miller book may have been somewhat less accurate depending
upon who the submitter was (Dr. Stafford was a major contributor), but with
56 years (?!) of corrections and additions by Dr. Peeples, is probably now
largely accurate as well, maybe some sections more than others. Both
parties concerned told me that these books will probably never be reprinted,
so I hope they are still available for you, should you be interested.

Yes, I am of the SC>MS>LA Robert familes (with Grimball, Jaudon, Stone, etc.
ancestors), descendant of Providence 'Provie' Robert (1774 SC - 1856 LA),
eldest daughter and fifth child of 12 of Capt. Peter Robert (1740 SC-1807
MS) and Anne Grimball (1749 SC- bef. 1825). Providence was the sister of
your James Robert and the wife of Robert Tanner (1769 SC-1839 LA).
