I am also researching Gilbert's of Rapides Parish - my husband's great
grandfather was George W. Gilbert who married a Sarah Jane Varner Garvey.
They moved to Polk County, TX before 1860. The community there was
filled with people from Rapides Parish that moved to get further away
from the civil war.
