I am trying to connect John ATEN b. <1793> in PA to his parents. Census of
1830, Rapides Parish, John ATON, was between 30-40 yrs; wife, believed to be
Mary JOHNSON, was bet 2-30 yrs. They had two children, one boy and one
girl, under 5 yrs. So they married about 1825. Was Mary the daughter of
William JOHNSON, whom they were living near? 1840 census, John ATON was
still living in Rapides Parish. They now had six children. The first son
and daughter are now between 10-15 yrs, two girls are bet. 5-10 yrs, and two
boys are under 5 yrs. They are living near Elizabeth JOHNSON, who is in
same age catagory as John's wife (30-40 yrs), with one girl between 15-20
yrs. Is she an in-law to John ATON? There are JOHNSONs living in Avoyelles
Parish in 1840. Is Mary related to them? 1850 census of Sabine Parish,
John ATTEN, 57 yrs, farmer b. PA; wife, Mary, 43 yrs, b. LA; children: Isaac
21 yrs b. LA; Mary Ann, 18 yrs; Samuel, 13 yrs; John, 11 yrs; Will, 8 yrs;
Sophy, 5 yrs. My great-grandfather, Henry Clay, was b. 5 Jan 1851 at
Zwolle, Sabine, LA. Edmund JOHNSON, 22 yrs, was living next house. John
ATEN d. by April 1860. Most of his children moved into TX by 1870, except
son, Will ATEN, who returned to Sabine Parish after the Civil War. Sons,
Samuel and John ATEN, were killed in the Civil War. Widow, Mrs. Mary ATEN
married Joseph RATLIFF on 12 Oct 1861. If anyone can shed some light of the
ATEN and JOHNSON families of Avoyelles, Rapides and Sabine Parishes, LA, I
would appreciate your help in establishing the parents of John ATEN of PA
and Mary (JOHNSON ?).
