Subject: [LASTTAMM] STGS Regular Meeting - Saturday, March 8, 2008
Date: Sun, 02 Mar 2008 10:58:27 -0600

Hello Everyone,

The next regular St. Tammany Genealogical Society meeting is
scheduled for Saturday, March 8, 2008 from 10:00 AM until Noon at the
Covington Branch Library Meeting Room.

It seems that more and more family historians are now interested in
putting their genealogical research on the computer. Choosing the
'correct' genealogy software for your family history can often be a
dilemma especially for those with limited computer
experience. Organizing and documenting the information that you
and other family members have collected need not be
overwhelming. There is an assortment of genealogy software programs
to choose from. The software you choose should aid in your search
for family information, not be the source of frustration and
despair! The ease of use, the learning curve, as well as output in
the form of reports and charts that you wish to publish for family
members all need to be considered before choosing a software
program. Taking the time to learn the capabilities of the various
programs will enable you to produce professional results.

To assist you in making a decision concerning the selection of your
first genealogy program or perhaps choosing a different program than
you are currently using, the March STGS meeting will include
demonstrations and comparisons of the use of Family Tree Maker (Ver
16) and RootsMagic (Ver 3). Family Tree Maker has been the number
one best seller for more than a decade, and RootsMagic is one of the
best of the rest.

Also on the agenda for the March meeting is an update concerning the
STGS "Archival Work Days" held from 1 to 3 PM on the second Tuesday
of each month at the St. Tammany Parish Library's Covington Branch.

Reminder: The Megan Smolenyak Lecture Series scheduled for June 21,
2008 is not yet sold out. The early registration fee of $35 has been
extended until March 22, 2008. After March 22, the registration fee
will be $45 and then $55 at the door, assuming it is not sold out
before then. The Flyer for the Smolenyak Lecture Series is available
on the STGS Web site at:

In case some of you are interested in attending, a presentation is
scheduled for 2:00 PM on March 5th at the St. Tammany Court House
(Justice Center) honoring the contributions to genealogical research
made by Mrs. Bertha (Perreand) Neff as a result of her preservation
and indexing efforts for the old St. Tammany archive materials. In
1962, the newly elected Clerk of Court decided to do something about
the 'mess' in the basement of the court house (the archives). The
clerk hired a retired legal secretary, Mrs. Neff, to take charge of
the old records in the basement. And that she did, sometimes
literally ironing out the wrinkles. She obtained some old used file
cabinets and file folders and went to work, for the next 25
years. Along the way, Mrs. Neff created an index card system for all
the records in the archives assembled by families. Mrs. Neff's Card
File is currently being computerized for easy access and use.

Let me know if you have any questions about the regular March STGS
meeting, the Smolenyak Lecture Series or the Mrs. Neff presentation.
