Does anyone have any information on a George Madison Latta, born April 4, 1822
in Huntington, PA, son of John Latta and Ann Hawkinberry Latta.
He married a Christian Jane Haught of Marion County, WV and they had 7 or 8
children, but then he disappeared for while over near Marietta, OH. We found
a record where he stole a pistol and a pair of pistols in Marietta (Record
Common Pleas Book No. 30, page 271). Another family story goes that he was
walking along the Ohio River looking for work and came across some men
floating logs down the river. They asked him to help them and when they got
further down the river (maybe to Marietta or Parkersburg - we do not know) the
law was waiting on them and the other men left, leaving a puzzled George with
stolen logs. We cannot find any record so far of this proceeding. He was
supposed to have gone to prison, escaped and came back home where he married
Permilia Jane Snyder of Doddridge County, WV. They had 4 children. He
supposedly died on October 3, 1892, but no one knows where. His bony was
brought back a far distance by wagon (a granddaughter stated) and he was
buried in Lewis County, West Virginia. Another family story stated that some
member of the family was found dead in a barrel on a riverboat. ANYBODY HAVE
ANY INFORMATION?
