Jayne -
My great-great grandfather, William Latta lived in Lancaster, Ohio - I have
some information in my home files on this and will be glad to look it up.
This William is the son of a John Latta who moved from (I believe...not sure
because I'm recalling from memory and am at my office at work) Westmoreland
County Pennsylvania. He had 2-3 sons ( one of whom is my greatfather
William Latta who eventually moved to Evart, Michigan) and 2 daughters. I
have to look up the information on the other sons one of whom was a
Morton...will have to let you know. The daughters were Elizabeth
Latta-Laidley (she married a doctor and eventually moved to St. Louis
Missouri) and a Katherine-Latta-Griswold-Wade (2 marriages here) who
eventually moved to Lennox, Mass. to be near her son. Kathe's son, known as
Fr. Latta-Griswold became an Episcopal Priest and became quite famous and
somewhat infamous in Lennox. He started a boys prep. school there, wrote a
few children's novels, and wrote an Episcopal catechism that was approved by
the church (original copies, as far as I know are still in the safe in the
church at Lennox). Finally, town legend has it (and some strong beliefs by
some members of the community) that he haunts the rectory and has
mysteriously left his calling card at selected homes in Lennox. Probably
more than you wanted to know at this point!
What are your links to Lancaster - is it this same family?
Bill Latta (yes...another William!)
Okemos, Michigan

Hello Latta Group,
Newbie - referred to your list by . My
genealogy person searches have not uncovered any Latta names
yet. But I am also trying to do the 'genealogy' of our
home. This home is located in Lancaster, Fairfield County,
Ohio. The original name of the town was NEW LANCASTER and
many of the first settlers were from Lancaster PA. I have
checked your archives and found a lot of references to
Lancaster Co PA but found none for Lancaster OH. The town
was started in 1800 by Ebenezer Zane of Zane's trace fame.
In 1848 this home was built in the LATTA subdivision. Do
any of you know about a LATTA who lived in Lancaster, OH and
may have been the originator of this subdivision?
-----------
I would like to know more about this LATTA, as part of the
history of this home.
-----------
Thank you for your time and patience, this is off subject.
Jayne Dye
