I posted some queries about the James LATTA family and the shipwreck of
1738, and these are the results:

+++++++++
I found both James Latta and the Rev. Francis Alison, D.D. in the same
paragraph of The History of Chester County, PA.

New London Academy - Rev. Francis Alison opened an academy at New London
in 1743, which became a justly celebrated institution, and furnished
both
Church and State many men of mark. Among those who were educated there
were .... Rev. James Latta, D.D., ....

Later in the same book

Rev. James Latta, in 1830, the Mantus Female Seminary was opened under
the
auspices (not a direct quote)

He is also was the pastor of The Presbyterian Church of Penningtonville
(now Atglen). He was installed 11/11/1852. Died May 30, 1862.

++++++++
There was a William LATTA who was minister of the Great Valley
Presbyterian Church in Chester County from 1799 to 1847.

A great deal of information on him is available through Robert Mayne
Patterson's HIDSTORY OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF THE GREAT (CHESTER)
VALLEY" (Alfred Martien, Philadelphia 1869).

My ancestor. Rev. John GEMMILL was minister of that church 1791-98 and
Rev. Latta lived in John's house for a few years.

There was a William LATTA who was the best known and most loved minister
at the Great Valley Church in Chester county, PA. He officated at all
the baptisms, marriages, deaths during his long pastorate. He is buried
in the old churchyard there. On his tombstone is a open bible cut into
the marble slab.

The earliest congregations met as early as 1710 and the church was
regularly organized in 1714. At first the meetings were held in the
woods, then in private houses, finally a building was erected which was
used for 10 years, the building was 23 foot square with a gallery and
pews, schoolhouse adjoining, 2 acres of land was set apart as the
churchyard.

Before the church was built the pastor was Rev. Hugh DAVIS b 1664 in
Cardingasnshire, Wales, he died 1753. Then came Rev. Malachi JONES (my
5th gr gf) was pastor until 1720, next was David EVANS an early Yale
graduate in 1714 he had church troubles and preached a farewell sermon
saying this, "only goats I found you, goats I leave you!." Next came Rev
William LATTA.
